Blessed ~ the agency of a beautiful voice and a broad range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a radiant scat singer, and had near-stainless elocution; one could always understand the jangling she sang. The one fault was that, during the time that she always sounded so happy to have being singing, Fitzgerald did not always cashier up below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
